The first RSPO Peatland Working Group (PLWG) was established in 2010 and operated till late 2012, and produced
- RSPO Manual on Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Existing Oil Palm Cultivation on Peat; and
- RSPO Manual on Best Management Practices (BMPs) for Management and Rehabilitation of Natural Vegetation associated with Oil Palm Cultivation on Peat.
It is now five years after the completion of the work of the RSPO Peatland Working group and much further work has been done on peatlands. RSPO recognised the need to review and update existing BMPs to further provide clarity and guidance. Hence, the formation of PLWG 2 (active period: January 2017 – Dec 2019) was endorsed by the RSPO Board of Governors (BoG) in November 2016 to update existing BMPs and to provide additional guidance (deem appropriate) in relating to Peatlands and Oil Palm Cultivation on Peat.
It is proposed that the group comprises approximately 12 members, comprising mainly specialists in plantation and peatland management proposed primarily from Growers (Indonesia, Malaysia and Rest of the World) and Environmental and Social NGOs. In addition, (as with the first PLWG) some independent peatland experts may be invited to join/ provide inputs.
Following best practices, the RSPO Secretariat is now calling for participation and nomination of representation from each stakeholder constituencies. The Term of Reference (ToR) for member of PLWG 2 is provided below.
Tentatively first PLWG meeting is scheduled on March 20 & 21, 2017.
The call for participation and/or nomination closes on February 19, 2017.
