Global Youth Impact Projects Competition

For many organisations working in sustainability, young people hold the key to transforming consumer awareness on sustainable consumption, and this is particularly true for palm oil.

Palm oil is the most widely used vegetable oil in the world because of its functional benefits, versatility and widespread availability. Palm oil is also the most important cooking oil for millions of people around the world, who often live in poverty. Plus, the trade of palm oil has increased exponentially in recent decades while the global debate on the sustainability of the crop has continued to evolve. Consumer pressure has a key role to play in shifting business behaviour and holding companies accountable for sustainable sourcing commitments.

As the next generation of consumers, engaging with young people is a critical strategy in encouraging companies to increase their uptake of certified sustainable palm oil .

The UN recognises youth as a key stakeholder in the global commitment towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Connected to each other like never before, young people want to and already contribute to the resilience of their communities, proposing innovative solutions, driving social progress and inspiring political change. We believe the global youth has a key role to play in helping achieve SDG 12 globally.

Under instruction of the UN CBD COP15 (The fifteenth meeting of the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity) working group, the Global Youth Impact Projects Competition is being organised by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) and WildBound. This event will focus on the role of global youth in enhancing the awareness of protecting biodiversity and increasing demand for sustainable palm oil. RSPO has been working with partners to support youth groups to develop impact projects relevant to sustainability and biodiversity conservation. We are searching for new impactful projects that raise awareness about environmental protection and biodiversity conservation and help educate consumers, companies and policy makers to better understand the importance of sustainable consumption and lifestyles, including the use of sustainable palm oil.

Now, we have collected the best impact projects from global youth groups. We are hosting a virtual global competition on 25 August 2021 to provide the opportunity for young people from around the world to present their projects to a jury panel. The three winning projects will have a chance to present at global events and will also be eligible for seed-funding to scale up and/or improve the project.

The jury panel will comprise experts from organisers and experts from Indonesia, Malaysia , India , Singapore, America, China, etc.
