Unilever recently announced its commitment to support work in Sabah, Malaysia by aiding in the restoration of wildlife habitats, and helping 60,000 hectares of oil palm plantations achieve RSPO certification through innovative sourcing strategies, such as jurisdictional approaches.
Unilever strategy involves a deforestation-free supply chain
The commitment is part of a programme led by Forever Sabah, the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Malaysia, and the Palm Oil and NGO (PONGO) Alliance, and was announced during the Global Climate Action Summit (GCAS) in San Francisco on September 13. The move is part of Unilever’s strategy to achieve a deforestation-free supply chain, and to further reduce emissions.
Walmart’s project Gigaton targets emissions reduction
Fellow RSPO member Walmart also announced their commitment to reducing emissions through Project Gigaton, which will link its suppliers, who are sourcing commodities from regions facing deforestation risk, to create and support place-based partnerships. Through Project Gigaton, which was launched last April, Walmart seeks to work with suppliers to reduce emissions from the company’s value chain by a gigaton (one billion metric tonnes) by 2030.
